Producers’ Bios and Past Work Experience
Mark Aspland
With twenty years of professional experience, Mark Aspland is a skilled director, producer, cinematographer and editor based in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. His expertise spans cinematography, video editing, directing, producing and storytelling, with a unique focus on community-driven projects that support and develop education and health initiatives. Mark’s professional journey began with formal education in Television and New Media Production and Adventure Tourism Business Operations, where he gained his technical and creative skills. These disciplines shaped his ability to navigate and thrive in diverse, often challenging environments, taking him across Africa, the Caribbean, and, since 2013, to the Canadian Arctic. It is in the North where Mark has truly cultivated his craft, adapting his vision to the distinct demands of northern landscapes and cultures.
In addition to his independent work, Mark has gained significant experience in the broadcast television industry, where he has consistently demonstrated his ability to take on multiple roles within production teams. From camera operation, lighting, audio and editing to directing and producing, Mark collaborates with companies that partner with a diverse range of broadcasters and media organizations, offering his expertise to deliver high-quality content. His flexible skill set and collaborative approach have made him an invaluable asset to numerous television projects, where he frequently steps in as a key contributor, working behind the scenes to ensure that production runs smoothly and creatively.
Through his work, Mark has established deep-rooted connections across Nunavut, traveling to twenty one communities to collaborate closely with local and international organizations, including government agencies, documentary filmmakers, educational institutions, private enterprises, and small businesses. His passion for storytelling is also reflected in his founding of a mental health charity initiative aimed at raising awareness and fostering community wellbeing. These experiences have deepened his understanding of the unique challenges faced by each community, allowing him to make a meaningful impact and build lasting relationships. A seasoned documentarian, Mark has developed a particular expertise in capturing oral narratives—ranging from traditional myths and practical knowledge to contemporary social issues such as mental and physical health challenges. His work is characterized by a commitment to preserving and amplifying voices that may otherwise go unheard, providing both a historical record and a platform for meaningful social dialogue.
Mark has taught numerous workshops across Nunavut, where he’s worked closely with Inuit youth, sharing his passion for video production. He actively seeks out youth interested in learning the craft, offering on-the-job paid training and valuable hands-on experience during productions. These opportunities not only provide real-world skills but also help foster a deeper connection to the local creative community, especially in areas where extra help is always needed for larger projects.
